How the WAEC Home Management papers work
Three papers, all compulsory. Papers 1 and 2 form a composite paper taken at one sitting. Paper 1: 50 multiple-choice objective questions answered in 1 hour for 50 marks. Paper 2: six essay questions of which candidates answer four in 1 hour 15 minutes for 50 marks. Paper 3: a 3-hour practical test carrying 100 marks, conducted by a visiting examiner appointed by WAEC. The syllabus assesses knowledge, understanding and application of management concepts (goals, values, standards, needs), decision making, the human and material resources available for managing a home, basic skills in caring for the home and society, consumer skills, sound health practices and self-reliant skills for effective living.

1. 1. Principles of Management

How is the WAEC Home Management exam structured?
Three papers. What does the practical test cover?
Practical tasks drawn from the syllabus: meal preparation and service, laundry and stain removal, simple garment repairs and sewing processes, cleaning and care of surfaces, bed making, flower arrangement and interior decoration. You are assessed on planning, method, hygiene, safety and the finished result.
What are the stages of the management process?
Planning (deciding what to do), organising (arranging resources), implementing (carrying out the plan) and evaluating (judging the result). Questions ask you to apply the process to a specific task such as preparing a family meal or cleaning the house.
Which stages make up the family life cycle?
The beginning stage (a newly married couple), the expanding stage (children are born and grow), the contracting stage (children leave home) and the empty-nest stage (the couple alone again). Each stage has its own needs and demands on resources.
Will I be asked to calculate bills and budgets?
Yes. Expect electricity consumption from meter readings, bill amounts from tariffs, family budgets, savings, simple interest on investments and percentages of income spent on items. The bank includes computed examples with worked answers.
What laundry agents and processes must I know?
Water, soaps and detergents, fabric rinses, stiffening agents such as starch, and bleaches; laundry equipment and tools; the steps of the family wash (sorting, mending, stain removal, washing, rinsing, drying, ironing, airing, storage); stain removal for common stains; and the care of special garments such as woollens and silks.
What is covered under wealth creation?
Creativity and entrepreneurship, money management and the family budget, ways of creating wealth such as saving, investment and trading, and capital market investment in stocks, shares and treasury bills with its advantages and guidelines.
